Temari Ball Workshop in Ballarat with NONA Tokyo
Join us for a truly special afternoon of Japanese craft as we welcome Rika from NONA Tokyo to Ballarat for an exclusive Temari Ball Workshop at the Rare Trades Centre.
Inspired by nature, colour, and the timeless beauty of traditional Japanese handcraft, Rika’s work celebrates the art of temari — decorative thread balls stitched with intricate geometric patterns and meaning. Using naturally dyed threads created from plants, her designs reflect the beauty and calm of the natural world.
The name NONA is inspired by the Japanese sound of nine — kyu (球), meaning ball or sphere — a symbol connected to temari. In Japan, nine is seen as beautifully imperfect, and because it is not complete, it can continue forever. This spirit of creativity, possibility, and ongoing journey is woven through Rika’s work.
Originally gifted as symbols of friendship and good fortune, temari have been treasured in Japan for generations. In this hands-on workshop, Rika will guide you step-by-step to create your own beautiful temari ball while sharing the story and tradition behind this remarkable craft.
No previous experience is necessary — beginners are warmly welcome.
